The Art of Broom Making
I’m really pleased to have been invited to teach this broom-making workshop at David Parr House. It’s a wonderful setting to explore a traditional craft, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you.
Join me for a relaxed and hands-on 4-hour session where I’ll guide you through the art of making your own hand brooms. This is a craft rooted in tradition, but just as relevant today—whether you want something practical for everyday use or a beautifully handmade object for your home.
During the workshop, you’ll make two to three hand brooms (depending on time), using a choice of natural fibres. I’ll introduce you to materials such as arenga for a firmer, more robust brush, broom corn for a classic all-purpose broom, and tampico for softer, more delicate sweeping. You’ll learn how each behaves and where it works best, so you can tailor your brushes to suit your needs.
I’ll take you through the key techniques step by step, and all tools and materials will be provided.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those with some craft experience. It’s a chance to slow down, work with your hands, and make something genuinely useful and satisfying.
Light refreshments will be available, but please bring a packed lunch.
All proceeds from the workshop go towards supporting David Parr House, helping to care for and maintain this unique place.
